The granulator determines flake size and influences fines, washing and drying, but it cannot by itself deliver a purity percentage or food-contact rPET. The project must connect Dutch feedstock, sorting, utilities, wastewater, EU machinery documentation and the downstream flake or pellet specification.

Define whether the project is granulation or full recycling

A granulation-only operation receives sorted, sufficiently clean bottles and produces size-reduced material for another recycler. A complete PET bottle washing line may include bale opening, bottle sorting, label removal, metal detection, granulation, cold or hot washing, density separation, rinsing, mechanical dewatering and thermal drying.

State the project boundary in the quotation. Otherwise, a buyer can compare a granulator package with a washing line as though both produce the same material. The PET bottle recycling system shows the wider process in which granulation operates.

Audit the Dutch feedstock first

Document whether bottles come from a deposit-return stream, commercial collection, mixed packaging bales or production scrap. Record PET colour, bottle size, compacted-bale condition, liquid residue, closures, labels, metal, PVC and non-bottle PET.

The Association of Plastic Recyclers’ PET rigid packaging guidance explains how closures, labels, adhesives, colour and multilayer features affect reclaiming. A recycler still needs representative local samples because collection and sorting determine the incoming mix.

Granulator selection criteria

Input factor

Design implication

Acceptance evidence

Whole or pre-shredded bottles

Hopper, rotor geometry and feeding method

Stable feed without bridging or unsafe manual intervention

Bale density and bottle size

Debaling, metering and cutting-chamber opening

Sustained input from representative bales

Metal and abrasive contamination

Upstream removal and wear protection

Reject log and inspected knife wear

Required flake size

Screen opening, knife geometry and clearance

Agreed particle-size distribution and fines

Dry versus wet granulation

Water circuit, drainage and downstream washing

Measured contamination removal, water load and wear

Cleaning access

Chamber opening, isolation and maintenance space

Safe documented changeover and inspection

Control feeding before increasing motor power

PET bottles and bales can bridge or arrive in surges. A bale opener, buffer and controlled conveyor can stabilize load. The best operating rate is the highest sustained rate that maintains the required flake size, acceptable fines, motor load and downstream quality.

Force-feeding may help with a defined input but is not a substitute for removing metal or oversized objects. Ask the supplier to demonstrate overload response and recovery using the buyer’s feed.

Specify knives, screen and flake quality together

Knife material, mounting, clearance, sharpness and rotor geometry affect cutting quality. A smaller screen opening may create a smaller nominal particle but can also reduce throughput, generate more fines or increase heat. Use a particle-size distribution rather than one maximum dimension.

During trials, collect retained samples and measure fines, oversize and the main fraction. Record current and throughput as knives wear. Our granulator maintenance checklist covers condition-based knife, screen, bearing and drive inspections.

Place the granulator correctly in the washing line

Upstream bottle and colour sorting should remove incompatible material before it becomes small fragments. Label removal and prewashing may reduce paper, dirt and loose material before or around granulation according to the line design.

After size reduction, friction washing and density separation address surface contamination and a defined float fraction. PET commonly sinks while many unfilled PE or PP closures float; PVC can sink with PET and therefore requires upstream or sensor-based control. The revised sink-float guide explains this limitation.

Size capacity on dry saleable output

A granulator’s nominal input rate is not the line’s dry accepted output. Labels, closures, residue, moisture, fines and rejected polymers leave the process. Planned maintenance and changeovers also reduce available running time.

Use representative trials to estimate saleable yield and availability:

Required design input = target saleable output ÷ saleable yield ÷ planned operating availability

Check each stage—sorting, granulation, washing, water treatment, separation and drying—against the same feed basis. Size buffers around real bottlenecks rather than adding an arbitrary percentage to every machine.

Dutch site, water and waste requirements

The Netherlands’ official business portal provides an overview of waste-management rules and permits. A project developer should confirm the applicable environmental and planning permit, notification, wastewater, waste-storage, transport and fire requirements for the specific municipality and activity.

If feed or output crosses borders, check the current waste-shipment classification and procedure before contracting transport. Equipment selection does not replace advice from the Dutch competent authority or a qualified local environmental specialist.

EU machinery and electrical documentation

For machinery supplied to the Netherlands, identify the applicable EU legal requirements for the complete configuration. CE marking is a manufacturer’s declaration of conformity, not a throughput certification. Review the EU declaration of conformity, technical documentation, instructions, circuit drawings, risk reduction, guarding and safety functions.

The European Commission’s machinery legislation page should be checked for the current transition and application dates. If separate machines are assembled into one line, responsibility for the conformity of that assembly must be defined.

Food-contact claims require a separate pathway

Washed PET flake or pellet is not automatically suitable for food contact. The European Commission explains that recycled plastics intended for food contact are subject to requirements for the recycling process, input control, decontamination and quality control. Review the current EU recycled-plastic food-contact guidance with a regulatory specialist.

Define the intended market before equipment selection. A non-food application, sheet producer, fibre producer and bottle-to-bottle recycler may impose different colour, PVC, moisture, intrinsic-viscosity and traceability limits.

Factory and site acceptance testing

Agree a test protocol before ordering. It should define feed origin and composition, run duration, sampling, dry mass balance, particle-size distribution, fines, accepted output quality, electricity, water makeup, downtime and safety-function tests.

Repeat relevant checks after installation in the Netherlands with local utilities and trained operators. Nameplate capacity is accepted only when the complete agreed line sustains the required output and quality under the stated feed conditions.

Build the financial model from current quotations

Use actual Dutch electricity, water, wastewater, labour, rent, collection, transport and disposal terms. Add knives, screens, bearings, filtration, laboratory testing, permits, insurance, spares and planned downtime. Base revenue on written buyer terms and saleable dry output.

Test lower-yield, lower-price and reduced-availability scenarios. Generic European bottle prices, labour savings or payback periods do not demonstrate this project’s return.

Frequently asked questions

Can a PET granulator alone produce food-grade flake?

No. Granulation controls size reduction. Food-contact rPET requires a compliant collection, sorting, washing, decontamination and quality-assurance pathway.

What capacity should a Dutch PET bottle line use?

Size it from target saleable output, trial-derived yield, planned availability and the sustained capacity of every process stage—not a generic input range.

Should PET bottles be granulated wet or dry?

Either may suit a defined line.
