Nets and ropes may contain PA6, PA66, HDPE, PP, PET, mixed fibers, coatings, floats, weights and repair sections. If these materials enter one melt stream, the result can be unstable or unusable even when the equipment processes them mechanically.

“Ghost gear” specifically refers to abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear. A recycling plant may also receive controlled end-of-life nets from manufacturers, aquaculture sites, ports and fishing operations. Source, exposure and contamination determine the process route.

Why fishing nets need a dedicated process

Wrapping: long filaments and knots can wind around shafts, rotors and conveyors.

Variable composition: the net, ropes, floats and repairs may use different polymers.

Abrasive contamination: sand, shells and mineral residue accelerate knife and screen wear.

Metals: hooks, clips, wires and weights can damage size-reduction equipment and contaminate product.

Salt and organic residue: washing and water treatment must be designed for the actual load.

Moisture: polyamide is hygroscopic and requires controlled drying before melt processing.

Step 1: receive, inspect and segregate

Record supplier, use, approximate age, polymer declaration and visible attachments. Weigh the lot before and after removal of floats, weights, metal fittings, ropes and foreign material. Large bundles may need an approved cutting or bale-opening station before the main shredder.

Separate polyamide nets from PE and PP where the intended products require mono-polymer streams. Visual inspection alone is insufficient for unknown nets; use appropriate identification methods and representative sampling. Keep PA6 and PA66 separate when the buyer or process requires it.

Magnetic separation captures suitable ferrous metal but will not remove lead, many stainless alloys or every hook. Combine source inspection, manual removal, metal detection and equipment protection according to the risk.

Step 2: cut or shred without uncontrolled wrapping

A single-shaft shredder with controlled feeding can be evaluated for bulky nets. Rotor geometry, knife arrangement, ram control, shaft ends and screen must suit long flexible material. Automatic reverse may protect against overload, but it does not make the system immune to wrapping or foreign objects.

The required output size comes from the washer, dryer and extruder feed design. A fixed strip length is not optimal for every net. During trials, record feed preparation, stable mass throughput, motor load, wrapping points, knife wear, oversize recirculation and the proportion of fines.

Workers must follow the site’s guarding and lockout/tagout procedure. Never pull a net from an operating hopper or rotor.

Step 3: wash and manage the water circuit

A net-washing route can include pre-rinse, agitation, a friction washer, separation, rinse and mechanical dewatering. The sequence depends on salt, sand, oil, algae, organic load and attachments.

Process water should be monitored for suspended solids, dissolved load, salinity and any chemical treatment used. A closed loop still needs solids removal and a controlled water-quality plan; otherwise removed contamination can be redeposited on the plastic.

What float-sink separation can and cannot do

Unfilled PE and PP commonly float in water, while many polyamides and PET sink. This can support separation, but it does not guarantee chemically pure nylon. Filled materials, trapped air, biofouling, coatings and mixed assemblies can change behavior. PA6 and PA66 also sink together and cannot be separated from each other by a simple water tank.

Use density separation as one control step and verify the product with material identification and the buyer’s contamination test.

Step 4: dewater and dry to the downstream specification

A centrifugal dewatering machine removes surface water from washed pieces. Thermal or desiccant drying may follow, especially for hygroscopic polyamide before extrusion.

The required moisture depends on the resin, extruder, residence time and pellet specification. Measure moisture with an agreed method near the extruder feed, not only immediately after the mechanical dryer. Protect dry polyamide from reabsorbing moisture during conveying and storage.

Step 5: extrude, filter and pelletize

Prepared nets are metered into an extruder configured for the identified polymer and feed form. The process may include:

Controlled force feeding or compaction

Melting and mixing at a validated temperature profile

Venting or vacuum degassing appropriate to the material

Melt filtration selected for contaminant load and pressure stability

Strand, water-ring or another qualified pellet-cutting method

Cooling, drying, screening and lot packaging

Filtration removes particles above the chosen level; it cannot remove every salt, pigment, odor, dissolved contaminant or incompatible polymer. Polyamide and polyolefin streams require different process settings and should not be combined without a deliberately engineered compound.

Pellet quality and end markets

Recycled nylon or polyolefin pellets are not automatically “near virgin.” Previous service, UV exposure, hydrolysis, oxidation, additives, polymer mixing and extrusion history can change properties. Qualify each grade for its intended product.

A useful specification may cover polymer identity, melt viscosity or flow, moisture, ash, metal, black specks, color, odor, contamination and required mechanical properties. Fiber spinning, injection molding and extrusion can require different consistency and filtration.

Equipment durability and maintenance

Protect bearings and seals from wash water, grit and wrapped filament.

Trend knife clearance, edge condition and screen wear by processed mass.

Inspect gearbox load, couplings, ram guides and shaft-end wrapping.

Provide safe access for cleaning and removal of foreign material.

Stock verified wear parts based on lead time and measured life.

Link downtime and part wear to each feed lot.

A large gearbox or hard knife steel is not sufficient by itself. System protection, feeding, alignment, maintenance access and contaminant control determine reliability.

Data needed to size a fishing-net line

Net and rope polymers, source and percentage by mass

Bundle dimensions, knot size, line diameter and bulk density

Floats, metals, lead, sand, shells, salt and organic contamination

Required hourly input and saleable output

Available water, wastewater treatment, power and drying utilities

Required shred size, pellet specification and intended end market

Site safety, dust, noise and environmental requirements

Run a representative sample before final design. Profitability should be calculated from usable yield, sorting labor, disposal of attachments, utilities, wear, filter consumption, buyer deductions and transport—not from the assumed value of nylon alone.

View the fishing-net shredding trial and send material details through the Energycle contact form for a line-specific review.

Frequently asked questions

Can nylon, PE and PP fishing nets be recycled together?

They should normally be identified and separated for mono-polymer recycling. Combining them requires a deliberately formulated product and validation.

Does a float-sink tank produce pure nylon?

No. It can separate many floating polyolefins from sinking materials, but PA6, PA66, PET and other sinking contaminants may remain and require additional control.

Why must nylon net flakes be dried before extrusion?

Polyamide absorbs moisture. Excess water during melt processing can cause hydrolysis and unstable pellet quality, so the feed must meet the specified moisture at the extruder.

Related resources

Industrial plastic shredders

Plastic washing systems

Plastic pelletizers

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"Can nylon, PE and PP fishing nets be recycled together?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"They should normally be identified and separated for mono-polymer recycling.
