Mechanical water removal is normally preferable to evaporating all wash water with heat, but there is no universal outlet-moisture, energy or capacity figure. Results change with particle form, incoming water, contamination, screen condition and feed stability.

This guide compares centrifugal dryers, film centrifuges, squeezing machines and screw presses, then shows how to specify an acceptance test for the actual recycling line.

Dewatering is not the same as final drying

Mechanical dewatering separates free or loosely held water by centrifugal force, drainage and compression. Thermal drying supplies heat and airflow to evaporate remaining moisture. The two stages may be used together when the downstream process needs drier material than mechanical equipment can consistently deliver.

Outlet moisture should always state the material, throughput, sampling point and test method. A number measured on clean rigid flakes cannot be transferred to printed film or woven bags. For PET extrusion, the final conditioning requirement is also different from surface-water removal after washing; use the PET flake drying guide for that material-specific route.

Four dewatering equipment categories

Equipment

Typical feed form

Main action

Important limitations

Centrifugal dewatering machine

Rigid PET, HDPE, PP and similar flakes

High-speed rotor moves material against a perforated screen and expels water

Flexible film may wrap or pass inconsistently unless the machine is designed for it

Film centrifugal dryer

Cut PE/PP film and selected flexible flakes

Rotor, paddles and screen adapted for light flexible material

Feed size, wrapping and screen loading must be tested

Film squeezer

Washed PE/PP film, raffia and woven material

Screw compression drains water and increases bulk density

Output form and heat must suit the extruder feeder

Screw press

Selected bulky or mixed wet streams

Slow compression against a drainage screen

May be a primary dewatering stage rather than the final moisture-control step

Centrifugal dewatering for rigid flakes

A centrifugal dewatering machine typically uses a rotating shaft or rotor inside a perforated basket. Water passes through the screen while flakes travel to the discharge. It is commonly applied after friction washing and rinsing of rigid plastics.

Selection variables include rotor diameter and length, screen open area, paddle arrangement, speed, drive, material-contact surfaces, water drainage and access for cleaning. Feed flakes should be characterized by size distribution, density, shape and contamination. Labels, fibers and fines can blind a screen or accumulate where clean rigid flakes would pass normally.

Measure vibration and bearing temperature during a sustained trial. Rotor balance and screen condition affect both reliability and moisture consistency. A short no-load demonstration cannot establish performance.

Dewatering flexible film

Film folds, traps surface water and has a low bulk density. It can wrap around rotating components or arrive in surges. A film-specific centrifuge needs a feed form, rotor and discharge arrangement developed for flexible material; a rigid-flake dryer should not be assumed to handle it.

A plastic film squeezing machine uses screw compression to drain water and compact the material. This can improve subsequent conveying and extruder feeding. The useful output is not simply the highest possible density: pieces that are too large, fused or irregular may feed poorly.

Compare moisture distribution, bulk density, output piece size, motor load and extruder-feed stability. The film squeezer bulk-density guide explains why wet input mass should not be used to claim an undefined compression ratio.

Screw-press dewatering

A screw press dewatering system applies gradual compression while liquid leaves through a screen or drainage zone. It may be used for feed that benefits from lower-speed handling or as a first mechanical step before another dryer.

Specify the material and reject risk carefully. Fibers, films, paper-plastic mixtures and grit interact differently with the screen and pressure zone. Check screen access, wear protection, drainage, torque limiting and how blockages are cleared safely.

How to calculate the real water load

Moisture percentages can be reported on a wet basis or dry basis. The specification must name the basis. On a wet basis:

Moisture = water mass ÷ total wet-material mass × 100.

If the dry-plastic mass flow is known, inlet and outlet moisture can be converted into kilograms of water entering and leaving per hour. This mass balance is more useful for sizing the next thermal dryer than a percentage alone.

For example, the same outlet moisture percentage represents a different evaporation load at different dry-solids throughput. Likewise, a line that loses fine plastic with the separated water may appear to remove more mass without producing more accepted dry product. Measure water, plastic solids and rejects separately.

Mechanical versus thermal energy

Evaporating water requires substantial heat, so removing free water mechanically before a thermal stage is usually sensible. However, a fixed multiplier such as “four to six times cheaper” is not a universal machine guarantee. The comparison depends on the kilograms of water removed, motor efficiency, heating method, air losses, heat recovery and local utility prices.

Compare systems using:

kWh of electricity per tonne of accepted dry plastic

Thermal energy or fuel per tonne

Kilograms of water removed mechanically and thermally

Plastic loss into drains, fines or dust

Maintenance, screen cleaning and planned downtime

The mechanical versus air-drying comparison provides a framework, but project economics should use measured line data and current local costs.

Six-step selection framework

1. Define the material

Record resin, rigid or flexible form, particle distribution, incoming moisture, bulk density, temperature and contamination. Include worst-normal material, not only the easiest sample.

2. Define the downstream requirement

State whether the output goes to thermal drying, storage, an extruder feeder or direct sale. Specify moisture, particle form and bulk density with test methods.

3. Calculate dry-solids throughput

Capacity should be based on dry plastic and expected incoming water. Daily average alone can hide surges from batch washing. Measure the maximum stable feed the upstream line will deliver.

4. Match equipment to particle behavior

Use rigid-flake centrifuges for compatible flakes, film-specific designs or squeezers for flexible feed, and screw presses where the material and dewatering role justify them. Validate ambiguous streams through trials.

5. Check installation and maintenance

Confirm foundation, drainage, access, lifting, noise, guarding, rotor locking, spare screens and bearings. Wet equipment also needs corrosion and cleaning provisions appropriate to the wash chemistry.

6. Agree on an acceptance test

Define the feed batch, stable test duration, sampling frequency and pass/fail results before purchase. Include stops and cleaning time, not only the best moisture sample.

Acceptance-test measurements

Dry-plastic mass flow and total wet feed

Inlet and outlet moisture using the same declared method

Water collected and plastic solids lost with it

Average and peak current, vibration and bearing temperature

Output bulk density and particle form for flexible materials

Stoppages, screen blinding, wrapping and manual interventions

Time for safe opening, cleaning, screen inspection and restart

Troubleshooting by symptom

Outlet moisture rises

Check incoming water load, feed rate, screen blinding, drainage, rotor or screw condition and material-size changes. Do not assume the motor is undersized before these variables are measured.

Film wraps or the feed bridges

Review cut size, hopper, metering, rotor-end details and whether the equipment is designed for flexible material. Reducing feed rate may stabilize a test but does not solve a poor configuration.

Vibration increases

Stop and inspect according to the manufacturer’s procedure. Uneven buildup, damaged screens, rotor contact, bearing wear or imbalance can create a serious mechanical risk.

Thermal dryer load remains high

Build a water mass balance. The cause may be unstable mechanical dewatering, higher inlet water, an incorrect moisture sample, air leaks or heat losses—not simply insufficient dewatering motor power.

Complete drying-system integration

A dewatering machine must be matched to conveyors, washers, water treatment and the next drying or extrusion stage. The plastic drying system guide covers complete-system design, while the plastic washing system overview shows where mechanical water removal fits in a line.

Choose from measured water removal, accepted output and downstream stability. Catalogue moisture, capacity and price ranges without the test conditions are not a reliable procurement basis.

Frequently asked questions

Which dewatering machine is best for rigid plastic flakes?

A centrifugal dewatering machine is commonly used, but the rotor, screen and capacity must be tested with the actual flake size, contamination and incoming water load.

Should washed film use a centrifuge or a squeezer?

It depends on film form and the next process. A film-specific centrifuge removes water, while a squeezer also compacts the material. Compare moisture, wrapping, bulk density and extruder feeding in trials.

Is a thermal dryer always required after mechanical dewatering?

No. It is required when the downstream moisture specification cannot be met consistently by mechanical equipment alone. The decision must follow the material and final process requirement.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"Which dewatering machine is best for rigid plastic flakes?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"A centrifugal dewatering machine is commonly used, but the rotor, screen and capacity must be tested with the actual flake size, contamination and incoming water load."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Should washed film use a centrifuge or a squeezer?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It depends on film form and the next process.
