Isolate electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and stored mechanical energy; lock and tag the isolating devices; verify the zero-energy state; and control access to the work area. Guards and interlocks must be restored and tested before production.

Build a maintenance schedule from operating conditions

Incorrect clearance can reduce cutting efficiency or allow contact.

Check the screen for cracks, enlarged holes, distortion and blocked openings. A screen is both a sizing and containment component; do not weld or modify it without an approved procedure. Bearings, rotor and drive system

Trend bearing temperature and vibration under comparable load rather than relying on touch. A sudden change may indicate lubrication problems, contamination, misalignment, looseness, belt tension error or rotor imbalance. Use the specified lubricant and amount; over-lubrication can be as harmful as insufficient lubrication.

Inspect belts, pulleys, couplings and mounting bolts during safe shutdown. Belt dust, glazing or repeated tension loss points to a cause that should be corrected, not just another adjustment. After knife or rotor work, rotate the assembly by the approved manual method and complete a controlled no-load test before feeding material.

OSHA notes that combustible-dust incidents require facility-specific recognition and controls. Do not use compressed air in a way that disperses accumulated dust or creates additional exposure.

Foreign metal is another preventable cause of damage. Apply upstream inspection or metal separation appropriate to the feedstock, and quarantine loads after an impact until the chamber and rotor are checked.
